Concept
North Eastern Region (NER) of India comprising of eight States of Indian Union shares only 37 km link with mainland India and shares 4500 km borders with other countries of South East Asia. Nestled in the North-Easternmost part of vast country India’s NER is about 2300 km away from Purabandar, Westernmost part of India and 2500 km away from Kannayakumari, Southernmost tip of India, as the crow flies. When one moves towards East from NER of India and covers that distance required to be travelled to reach western or Southern tip of India one would cross seven South East Asian countries along with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal & other South East Asian countries lying within another one thousand Km towards South East.

The idea of Act East policy specially in the field of higher education and research is not an original one. Even before birth of Oxford, in 1167, Nalanda University in Eastern India had completed seven hundred years and was a seat of learning where students and monks from South East Asian countries came in thousands in pursuit of knowledge. The same Nalanda University has been reinvented and revived having international outlook with the cooperation of sixteen members States of East Asia Summit (EAS). Relationship between South East Asia and NER perhaps goes back far back centuries. India has shared heritage with South East Asian Countries. The North Eastern Region of India in particular has special affinity with South East Asian Countries.
